Warren Slater was born in Sydney, Australia in 1952 and currently resides on Long Island, New York. He attended art school full time at ESTC in Sydney during the late 1960's. His early years as an artist saw works in various mediums and techniques exploring conceptualism, minimalism and the ever enticing fields of 'real, image and illusion', as evidenced by his 1972 solo show at the ICA Gallery in Sydney. His next few years were spent refining his ideas in a series of paintings on permanent studio exhibition, from 1974 -1979, at the Shepard and Newman building in Darlinghurst.
From 1979 on Warren explored a successful career as a musician composer and after traveling and relocating to Los Angeles USA in 1990 he resumed painting with the beginning works of his current series. The works are inspired by a technique of dot painting reminiscent of Australian Aboriginal painting.
Using the idea of dots in a different more textural way, Warren has created a shimmering surface layer that interacts with the underpainting to realise an unusual tactile space.
His paintings represent the state of being in time, space and dimension. The series is an intuitive experiment combining technique, the subconcious and subjective experience. Within the paintings a seemingly simple work can draw the viewer into a world of complexities worthy of closer attention and scrutiny.
Warren's sculpture, paintings and 'giclee' fine art prints have been collected in Australia, New Zealand and now the USA and are on permanent exhibition at the Oscarzulu gallery gift shop in Northport, New York and also online at http:/www./oscarzulu.com
